Keep Your Mouth Shut

I received a call last night from an individual regarding a potential criminal charge that could subject him to 15 years in prison.
After committing the offense, the person felt so guilty and ashamed that he admitted what he had done to several members of his church group to which he belonged. Unfortunately, one of the members of the group reported his actions to the police. The person also admitted his behavior to his spouse who then terminated their relationship. In addition, after being contacted by the police about the incident, he voluntarily admitted what he had done to them. As I told him, the admission to the police will probably result in a criminal charge. His admission will leave little room to negotiate a deal and get this person the help he needs. Rather it will subject him to several years in prison. While I am not condoning his conduct, the lesson to be learned is, “keep your mouth shut” and then contact an attorney.
